Variable Frequency Drives for Fans
In stock
This incentive is available for installing Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) on existing HVAC fans to improve efficiency by matching motor speed to system demand.

Required Documentation:
- Proof of baseline operation.
- Control sequence showing VFD tied to variable; signal (differential pressure, flow, temperature etc.)
For retro-commissioning:
- Existing case: Documentation (e.g., EMS screenshots, trend data, functional testing) showing VFD operating at fixed speed.
- Proposed case: Documentation (e.g., EMS screenshots, sequence of operations, as-built design documents) showing VFD operating at variable speeds.
Important Consideration:
- New chillers with integrated VFDs may qualify under the chiller incentive instead.
- Applicability: Eligible for retrofit projects.
- Baseline Efficiency: Existing HVAC fans with throttling devices or constant speed operation. Motor must operate more than 2,000 annual hours.
- Qualifying Efficiency Requirement:
- Installation of VFDs must include permanent removal or disabling of throttling devices (inlet vanes, bypass dampers, bypass valves, throttling valves).
- VFD speed must be automatically controlled by differential pressure, flow, temperature or other variable signals.
- Exclusions:
- Redundant or backup units.
- New chillers (with or without integrated VFDs}.
- Replacement of existing VFDs. o Existing two-speed cooling tower motors retrofitted with VFDs.
- New cooling towers.
- New HVAC fans or AHUs (per ASHRAE 90.1-2013).
- New HVAC hydronic pumps >10 HP system power (per ASHRAE 90.1-2013).
